More info on lye disposal

Here’s another great post from the BBGA forum:

“Sodium Hydroxide is a strong base, but it still can be cut with a sufficient
concentration of a robust weak acid, vinegar comes to mind. Be careful with
the heat generated, add the vinegar slowly or better yet just a bit from
time to time.

“How much? Let kitchen chemistry be your friend. Before you
start, add a touch of purple grape juice to the lye solution. The grape
juice color changes to lighter shade (even greenish). As you add the vinegar
watch for the color to change back to purple (very dilute purple), when it
does it is (more than) safe for your septic system.”
